What is Polarimetric Infrared Imaging?

Standard thermal cameras measure the intensity of emitted infrared radiation. Polarimetric infrared imaging additionally measures the polarization state of thermal emission — a physical property that encodes information about surface material, texture, and geometry.

Man-made objects — vehicles, weapons, equipment, and structures — tend to emit thermal radiation with a detectable polarization signature. Natural backgrounds — soil, vegetation, and rock — emit predominantly unpolarized radiation. This difference provides a discriminating channel that is invisible to conventional thermal imaging.

Why It Matters for Defense Applications

Modern camouflage materials are specifically engineered to match the thermal signature of backgrounds. A vehicle covered in thermal camouflage net may appear nearly indistinguishable from background foliage in a standard LWIR image. Polarimetric imaging reveals the camouflage because:

  1. The smooth surface of the camouflage net emits polarized radiation
  2. Natural rough, random vegetation surfaces emit less polarized radiation
  3. The polarization contrast exposes the man-made object shape
